את הספר כתבה רות' בזמן לימודיה האקדמאיים באוניברסיטת נורת'ווסטרן שם למדה כתיבה יוצרת. לאחר צאתו זכה הספר להשוואות רבות עם טרילוגיית "משחקי הרעב", זאת בשל הדמיון בקהל היעד ובאווירה דיסטופית של הספר. את ההשראה לספר קיבלה רות לדבריה בעת נהיגה במכוניתה בדרך למינסוטה, כסטודנטית קולג' בשנתה הראשונה. בסוף שנת 2012 התחילה חברת Summit Entertainment בעיבוד קולנועי של הספר לסרט בכיכובה של שיילין וודלי.

Devoured the trilogy. The ending was soooo bad.
