The title notwithstanding, the essays gathered in this collection are not all on Jewish themes; the title piece alludes to Shelley's pamphlet "The Necessity of Atheism." The author, a Jew of Anglo-American parents and of European experience, is a classicist, a novelist, and a screenwriter whose essays address a wide variety of issues connected with art, history, philosophy, and society. The broad scope of his writings is reflected in the fact that the index lists over 700 mentioned names from historical, philosophical, and literary figures, to politicians, to contemporary film makers and writers.
