Titlul face referire la o stipulație birocratică fictive care reprezintă forme de raționament ilogic și imoral. Primul capitol fusese publicat The opening chapter of the novel was originally published in New World Writing as Catch-18 in 1955, but Heller's agent, Candida Donadio, requested that he change the title of the novel, so it would not be confused with another recently published World War II novel, Leon Uris's Mila 18.

Super Titel, witzig, ehrlich und entblößend. Kein Roman im herkömmlichen Sinne mit einem Handlungsstrang. Daher hab ich wohl auch etwas länger gebraucht - man kann die Lesezeit ausdehnen und hat dann länger was davon. Heller hat das kafkaeske an den Kriegsspielen sehr schön dargestellt. Yossarian lebt!

Ich kann den Hype um das Buch nicht wirklich nachvollziehen; mir kam es eher etwas konfus vor, stellenweise lustig, sonst aber nur den Grauen -- und die Sinnlosigkeit -- des Krieges aufzeigend.

Joseph Hellers Antwort auf die Frage, wieso er nie mehr ein so gutes Buch wie "Catch 22" geschrieben hat: "Well, nobody else has either." Wo er recht hat, hat er recht.
