I read this stand alone novel before I'd even heard of Box or his series novels or his Edgar award and I fell in love with his writing. This is one of the best books I've read. It is the guy wrenching story of a normal American couple whose lives are turned upside down when they learn that they must give up their adopted daughter. What would you do of faced with such a dilemma. They try to fight back, try everything within the legal system, but the deck is so far stacked against them because the person who wants the child is not the biological parent, but the biological grandfather who just happens to be a wealthy and respected judge. The biological father is a teen and something about his is just way off. The couple begin their own investigation and learn that the grandfather has a hidden and sinister agenda for wanting the baby. Faced with an impossible decision the couple struggles with their own sense or morality and justice .
