Für mich sein wichtigster Roman. Flaubert ist Vorbild für die moderne Literatur, kein Wort zuviel, kein Gelaber, er nimmt den Leser ernst, anerkennt seine Intelligenz, ganz anders als der langweilende Oberlehrer Thomas Mann.
