I loved this intimate glimpse into family life in Russia leading up to and during the Second World War. The extremely harsh realities of their daily lives during the War is heartbreaking, but the fighting spirit of the Russian people is inspiring. The characters are flawed, passionate, and real - without even realising that it's happening, you become very emotionally invested in their lives, even with the more deplorable characters. That the series is written by a Russian-born author who grew up in St Petersburg gives it an extra sense of authenticity.
