This is the worst children's book ever written. If you think I am making this up then read this book and turn to the final page. The ending is not cute, or quirky, or abstract humor. What it is: extremely bizarre, morbid, and the absolute LAST THING you want to see while reading this book to a young child.
Once you see how off the ending is, you begin to also ask yourself about the artwork. All the drawings in the book have a strange vibe, especially the main character who is a boy that they illustrated with sunken, lifeless eyes. He is also wearing striped pajamas. Look up the movie "The Boy in Striped Pajamas because this detail definitely seems intentional in the larger creepy context of this story. If this symbolism was explained or referenced in any way, I may understand. But it isn't. It just becomes ONE MORE disturbing thing about this "children's book" that, again, nobody should EVER read to a child.
If you think I am exaggerating then you haven't encountered this book. I am writing this review to prevent other parents from opening this horror. I am also leaving this review for any parents in the future who will go through what I just did (getting this innocent looking book at the library and then realizing how weird it is and that I NEVER should have let my kid experience it), and who are simply looking for a REAL review made by another sane person. So if that person is reading this: yes, you are not alone! This book never should have been allowed to be published and it is bizarre that it exists at all.
If I could give this book a negative review I would. And I plan to review this book everywhere I can, simply as a public-service to all loving parents.
