Ha vinto un Globe-Horn Book Award a Boston e è stato considerato dall'ALA Notable Book un libro adatto sia per bambini sia per giovani adulti. Da questo romanzo il regista giapponese Hayao Miyazaki nel 2004 ha tratto il film d'animazione omonimo, ricevendo una candidatura al Premio Oscar come miglior film d'animazione. Nel 2006 all'autrice è stato assegnato il premio Phoenix per quest'opera. L'autrice ha scritto altri due libri con gli stessi protagonisti, Il castello in aria nel 1990 e La casa per ognidove nel 2008.

Ms. Jone's subtle humor makes this book incredible. 9.5!

This is one of my very favorite stories. It's a book I've re-read numerous times. I love the character growth that takes place, how it starts out feeling like a very trite simple story and builds until you feel like you've known these characters your entire life.
