Elaborando sobre personagens e tramas mostradas na novela, Card escreveu mais tarde livros adicionais para formar a série Ender's Game. Card então lançou uma versão atualizada de O Jogo do Exterminador, em 1991, mudando alguns fatos políticos para refletir com precisão as mudanças políticas da época.
A recepção ao livro foi globalmente positiva, embora alguns críticos denunciarem a justificação que Card dá à violência de seus personagens. Tornou-se também leitura sugerida de muitas organizações militares, incluindo a Marinha dos Estados Unidos. O Jogo do exterminador ganhou o Prêmio Nebula em 1985, de melhor romance e em 1986 o Prêmio Hugo de melhor romance. Suas sequencias, Orador dos Mortos, Xenocídio, Os Filhos da Mente, e Ender in Exile, seguem as viagens subsequentes de Ender para muitos mundos diferentes na galáxia. Além disso, mais tarde as novela, A War of Gifts e Ender's Shadow se passam durante o mesmo período de tempo do original.

I rate this book as a 10; not because of the dialogue or the characters (who piss me off from time to time), or plot points or plot twists, but simply because it's one of the most unique stories I've ever read. I wanted to like it and it lived up to the hype. The story is not told how traditional stories are told. There is an exceedingly large exposition with lots of character development which you then have to have a firm understanding of in order to get the wrap up. The final parts are almost self told and filled in by what you know about the characters and only makes sense because of what we know. This in effect goes to shorten the whole novel by filling in the ending yourself and this approach did not really have any drawbacks and the story still felt full and fleshed out. As far as art styles go this was a 10/10. As far as complex ideas or new thoughts being brought to the table ... not so much // start for the adventure, stay for the art, and don't worry about the lack of narrator insight or commentary onto human relations or the nature of the universe state p
