The author does a good job of providing an overview of a vast subject and takes a balanced view of it, neither too harsh, nor too uncritical. The reader is drawn into the tale, especially when we come to the famous Pharaohs, Akhenaten, Horemheb, and Rameses II. Disappointed that there is not any discussion of the books of Moses and where they might fit. Sometimes lacking in excitement, but very good history, essential reading for someone who wants to learn about the ancient world. For me, it filled a gaping hole in my own prior understanding of history
