The lead characters are an ambitious human named Kaya no Yoshifuji and a fox woman named Kitsune. The story follows Johnson's Theodore Sturgeon Award-winning story "Fox Magic", and precedes her novel Fudoki in the "Love/War/Death" trilogy.
