Shantaram is een boek uit 2003 geschreven door Gregory David Roberts.
Het verhaal gaat over een Australische voortvluchtige die in het begin van de jaren 1980 in Bombay belandt en uiteindelijk lid wordt van de Mumbaiker maffia.
Roberts werd uiteindelijk in Duitsland opgepakt met een vals paspoort en heeft, na zijn resterende straf in Australië te hebben uitgezeten, zijn verhaal geschreven.
Er is enige onduidelijkheid in hoeverre het verhaal echt gebeurd is, maar ongetwijfeld zullen er veel parallen lopen tussen feit en fictie. Sinds 2007 is de verfilming in voorbereiding met onder anderen Amitabh Bachchan en Emily Watson.

The scents of India, incredible atmospheres, stories and unforgettable quotes. This book has it all. I was really sad when I reached the last page, because I got attached to the protagonist and side-characters. It's a book able to teach something and at the same time, totally engaging and thrilling. Don't be scared by the number of pages, in the end they will be not enough.

This is my favorite book. I love both the story and the story behind it. It was so life changing for me that I keep coming back to read it again and again.
