På trods af Batemans pæne overflade er han seriemorder, og bogen indeholder meget detaljerede beskrivelser af blodige mord og seksuelle optrin. Den blev, blandt andet på grund af dette, stærkt kritiseret af mange da den udkom, og først i år 2000 blev den filmatiseret af Mary Harron med Christian Bale i hovedrollen som Patrick Bateman.

I couldn't put this book down until I had finished it. This is all that I can really say that is positive about the book, as the sections about violence were horribly disturbing, the sections about fashion incomprehensible, the sections about musical artists totally out of place, and the sections about the narrator's dating life as boring as they are to the narrator. ...but I couldn't put it down.
