Dr. Frankenstein's memorable monster was written centuries ago, but is still thrilling to read about. The doctor creates a man who is hideous to the eye but has some good qualities. His difficulties are told in this early romantic novel. Shelly's novel would be appropriate in a 12th grade English class. Themes such as family, isolation, sight vs reality can be examined.

Creech's novel Bloomability tells the story of an adolescent Domenica or Dinnie who goes to live in Switzerland with her aunt and uncle. Her adventures and lessons learned there are exciting to read about. Dinnie is a well developed character. Her dynamic personality can allow students to connect and travel in Switzerland also. This would be most appropriate for 5-8thgraders. The book could lend itself to learning about book reports and character analysis.
