The Sound and the Fury é um livro do escritor estadunidense William Faulkner, em que são utilizados vários tipos de narrativa, incluindo a técnica conhecida como fluxo de consciência, na qual Faulkner foi um dos pioneiros no Século XX, ao lado dos escritores europeus tais como James Joyce e Virginia Woolf. Publicado em 1929, The Sound and the Fury foi seu quarto romance, porém não foi um sucesso imediato. Em 1931, no entanto, quando publicou seu sexto romance, Sanctuary – um romance mais sensacionalista que Faulkner posteriormente confessou ter sido escrito por razões financeiras – The Sound and the Fury também alcançou sucesso comercial, e Faulkner começou a receber as atenções da crítica.
Em 1998, a "Modern Library" classificou The Sound and the Fury em sexto lugar na sua lista dos “100 melhores romances em língua inglesa do Século XX”. O livro também figura entre os 100 Livros do Século pelo “Le Monde”. Numa votação organizada por editores noruegueses, 100 escritores de 54 países elegeram os "melhores livros de sempre", e entre eles The Sound and the Fury ficou em 27º lugar.

I went into this book blind, having read everything of Cormac McCarthy's and moving onto Faulkner, first with As I Lay Dying and then this. I got about 5 pages in then went to Wikipedia, confirmed I wasn't insane with a quick skim through the overview so as not to spoil the story, and jumped back in. I won't pretend I found it an easy read; sentences needed re-reading, some pieces of the puzzle didn't click together until later, and often I found myself drawn into the text at an ever increasing pace until I hit a punctuation mark and realised I had no comprehension of what I had just read. I hope to read it again one day, armed now with a knowledge of the timeline; upon completing it I felt I'd just completed a puzzle as handfuls of the pieces were hurled at me, now I've seen the completed picture I can go back and enjoy each piece as it comes. Absorbing though confusing, well worth a read but perhaps arm yourself first with a summary.
